Helmut Kutin Award winners 2017

Congratulations to Geeta Singh, India, and Mariam Traore, Burkina Faso! These inspiring colleagues shine brightly in the lives of children and families, bringing hope and support when they are needed the most.

Geeta Singh from India

Geeta Singh, SOS mother at the SOS Children’s Village Khajuri Kalan in India, has 14 years of experience in her role as a caregiver for children with disabilities. The children have a very special mother in Geeta. She is admired for her patience in managing difficult behaviour and handling tough situations. She always strives to improve her knowledge, including studying Braille to support a child who is visually impaired. Two young people who grew up in her care were selected for the Special Olympic World Summer Games in 2015, held in Los Angeles.

Mariam Traore from Burkina Faso

Mariam Traore, SOS mother at SOS Children’s Villages Burkina Faso, stands out for her courage. The SOS Children’s Village Bobo Dioulasso was a target of demonstrators after the popular insurrection in October 2014. As the protesters converged on the SOS Children’s Village, Mariam brought 74 children out of the back door to hide the children in families in the community. Despite the high number of children and the threat of being attacked, Mariam, with the help of others, was able to shelter all children without any injury or loss.

Congratulations to the award winners!
